Africa Ignite - Rural Youth Development

In areas Of KwaZulu Natal youths encounter both economic and physical barriers that

prevent them from competing in the commercial market and earning a living even in todays so called modern times.

Services andresources necessary for rural youth development are very few and far between in the outer reaches of KwaZulu Natal. Transport, materials, funding to purchase materials and a lack of marketable ideas are just some of the obstacles the rural youth have to overcome. Africa!Ignite, a non-profit organisation, have set up training teams, marketing concepts and commercial outlets to help the youth of KwaZulu Natal to empower themselves.

Participation and enhanced opportunities for youth include involvement in policy and decision-making; creating a safe and inviting environment for youth activities and improved access to information and technology. The overall goal of the program is to provide opportunities for rural youth development, helping to improve their own lives and the communities in which they live.

Many of the youth of this region have had no formal training. They carry on the age old tradition, learnt at their parents knees, of traditional crafts. Although, the items that are being created are traditional tribal tools or crafts, in todays world there are so many ways in which to add and improve on these traditional crafts and to also to make them more marketable for the world outside South Africa.

Africa Ignite contribute by providing training, support, design input, capacity-building, distribution and marketing services to the rural youth development.

With the current economic climate and a lack of formal education and or tertiary education, the rural youth of South Africa have little or no chance of finding work outside their communities. In some cases families have little or no income and rely on the youth to provide some sort of living for them. With access to materials, distribution and great marketing concepts, the world will open up to these rural youths and allow them to contribute to the economic market of South Africa.

Africa!Ignite was established in 2004 by MiET Africa, an education development NGO based in South Africa, which works across the South African Development Community (SADC) region. MiET Africa formed Africa!Ignite partly to help sustain MiET Africas rural and community development work and partly to pursue synergistic areas of work. MiET Africa and Africa!Ignite function as mutually supportive sister organisations, with MiET Africa focusing more on formal education and Africa!Ignite more on rural development.

Our quest is to remove the obstacles that prevent Africas people from reaching their full potential, so that they can ignite the energy, the creativity and the economic power of this glorious continent.

Africa!Ignite is a dynamic, evolving entity in the South African not-for-profit sector. We have a strong rural development track record: since our inception in 2005 we have paid over more than R14 million directly to rural entrepreneurs.

Our business model incorporates three strategic business units: donor-funded projects, trading and consultancy services.
