After Otoplasty - Recovery And Side Effects

Otoplasty can get you the natural, healthy ears you've always wanted

. It's a miracle of modern plastic surgery designed to fix one of nature's mistakes. It's usually an outpatient procedure, so you'll be walking out of the clinic the very same day.

But, you're not finished yet. Like all plastic surgery procedures, it takes some recovery time. There is post-operative otoplasty care, and you'll have to follow doctor's orders carefully. There is also some risk of side effects.

Keep It Dressed

At first, you'll have to wear a dressing over your new ear. This serves a dual function - it protects the ear from damage, and helps to finish shaping it. The doctor will tape it on carefully with thick tape, but you still have to be careful and make sure it doesn't slip.

You'll want to remove the bandages and have a quick look at your new ear, but don't do it! Resist all temptation to remove the dressing. Even a quick peek could cause trouble with your ear healing properly. You'll just have to wait until you're fully recovered.

Usually, the heavy bandages will be removed and switched for lighter ones in a few days. You'll have to make another trip to the clinic. In a week, the lighter bandages can come off. When you get the heavy bandages taken off, you'll be able to see what your new ear looks like.

Keep Your Head Up

For awhile after your otoplasty you'll have to sleep with your head elevated. Don't put any pressure. This restricts your sleeping position options a bit, but it will only be for a few nights.

You'll also have a special headband to wear only when sleeping. This may take longer than a week to come off. Your doctor will advise you when it's safe to sleep without it.

The Side Effects

There are some common side effects most people experience after otoplasty. There'll be some swelling and possibly some bruising. Some patients feel an aching or throbbing in the ears. These side effects should subside within a few days. If they don't get better, or if they get worse, talk to your doctor immediately. Around the time you get the heavy bandages off, any aching or throbbing should be gone.

You could also have an allergy to the anesthesia used. Your doctor should be able to detect an allergy beforehand, and switch to another anesthesia if there is a problem. Many doctors do allergy tests before using anesthesia, just to be safe and save time. Your new ears are waiting for you!
