After tsunami, one village vanishes

SAITO, Japan It's hard to believe there was ever a village here at all. Now, three days later, Saito is a moonscape of death and debris, a hellish glimpse into the phenomenal destruction caused by the killer wave that followed Japan's most powerful earthquake on record and one of the five strongest on Earth in the past 110 years.

The 70-year-old frantically climbed a hill behind his home about two kilometers, or roughly a mile, from the beach. From his safe vantage point, he watched as, 20 or 30 minutes later, the giant wave arrived with a thunderous roar.

It crashed through what appeared to be a two-story-high sea gate, then careened through the valley, following a two-lane road. He saw it rise up, over and through a bridge and smash into scores of houses, ripping most apart instantly. Other houses, he said, were pulled from their foundations and slammed together.

As a Japanese self-defense force helicopter circled overhead, they lifted one hunched and frozen corpse from the mud of a dried canal filled with smashed cars and twisted mountains of corrugated iron sheeting. The tsunami had pulled the dead man's dark blue plaid shirt over his head. His white knuckles were visible, his hand still clenched.

I lived in Japan for a while and was In Tokyo. I can say that the Japanese people are some of the nicest, human beings I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. For example, If they just meet you through a mutual friend, you can be invited to dinner and find yourself sitting on a Tatami mat sharing home cooking and a glass of wine or Sake and being treated like a family member with a great dinner feast and party in your honor the same day as you meet your knew friends. I am so very sad for them..... I pray they don't have a meltdown on the nuclear plant(s) and add the threat of radiation to the disaster they have experienced.tera gold I saw how they take care of their children and it really is like the whole village or neighbors around the family care deeply for each and every ones little ones like they were their own. If you get to know them you will find that the People care really deeply concerned about humanity, not just problems facing them in their land but all over the world. They are truly a gifted and special community in the world and are truly human beings.
