Age of Conan Gold guide - AOC Riches
(Friday, March 25,2011) - Before I wrote this review, I asked Ben Chimes, the person selling the guide, if I could have his book so I could review it. Even though, according to click bank, it had a very low gravity (that means that there are very, very few sales), I thought it might be worth checking out and promoting. Maybe there were only few sales because it wasn't promoted correctly.
So I wrote to Ben Chimes and got this answer:
...
Right. Absolutely nothing.
I wrote twice after that, I resent the original mail and since I didn't have any answer, I asked in a third mail if he wasn't interested or if this e-mail address (which is, in fact, his support address) wasn't working.
Still no answer.
So I bought the book because I wanted to see what it was so I could write this review.
The book AOC Riches can be bought from www.aocriches.com, it costs $37.00 and when you buy it, you have lifetime updates. As Ben writes: " I will continue to level up new characters, read through patch notes, and compile new methods of gold making and will provide you with updates as they become available."
Nevertheless, the book doesn't take Khitai (Rise of the Godslayer's expansion pack) into account, even though it has been out for a year now (it was released May 11, 2010). So AoC Riches won't tell you how to make gold out of Khitai: Faction quests, grinding, Life Essences, etc. Nothing of this is covered at all.
The book speaks of mounts at level 50 for a cost of 3 gold. It has been a really long time now that riding and mounts were for level 40 - in fact, it always had:
"Right now you spawn them via your inventory, but we have discussed having them run in from off screen as if called. You will have to be level 40 to get a mount, and it will be affordable. We have various mounts, and I think everyone will be blown away by the quality on them.Interview, 22th June 2007 (Jason Stone)"
The price is down to one gold for mount and riding.
The problem was especially that the mount were too expensive for people to buy at level 40 so many first bought mount at level 50'ish.
Pity a gold-specialist who "earned nearly a thousand gold in AoC" (as stated in the homepage) didn't know that.
According to this book, you don't have access to Trader while you are in Tortage, so you can't really make gold before level 20, and before you are out of Tortage.
I am not sure of when the trader came to Tortage, but it was there in May 2008: http://bit.ly/hxY1T3
Somehow, I don't believe Ben Chimes when he says he is updating the material and the "lifelong updating" isn't worth much.
What about the advices in the book?
Because, in fact, even though the updating isn't optimised, the advice may be good enough.
Unnecessary advices
Firstly, you have unnecessary advices: You get an explanation of what quests you will have at what level to learn to gather copper, tin, ash, etc. Things you find out just by questing. You go to the NPC, the NPC tells you what to gather, when you have handed in, the NPC asks for some more and when you have gathered, you get to know that you have to wait until level 50 or 70 for your next level.
You hardly need a guide for that. The only positive thing is that the emplacements of the NPC's are written down, so they are easier to find.
Then you have 13 pages (from 50 to 63) which list up all the gear you are going to craft if you are a weaponsmith. Explanation: When you take weaponsmithing, at level 40, your teacher will ask you to make different weapons and show them to him (he will give them back to you as a quest reward so you don't lose them like you do with gathering quests).
You have them as different quests: You have to craft such and such weapons and show them to me. Well, all these weapons are listed in your quest log... and in AoC Riches. Never know, it might be too difficult to press J and watch your quest log, you may rather be browsing through the book.
Of course, I don't need to specify that you have the same useless informations for armorsmithing and alchemy, right?
Then you have several pages of how much gold you are supposed to have at which level if you are power levelling... I am not sure of the pertinence of this information.
Cheats
Then Ben Chimes advises you on how to exploit a bug at Yakmar to make the raid with only 6 people. I am not sure if the bug still can be exploited since the book is that old. I didn't check it out, and I don't intend to do so.
I doubt that people who buy a gold guide about how to make gold and become rich are interested in grouping up with other friends to exploit a 3 or 4 years old bug.
Incomplete informations
Then you have a bunch of incomplete informations. Ben Chimes will tell you in what part of the world, you can find blue gear to sell. Now, that is interesting. It is because it is very usable if you have an alt, you want to gear up or just if you want to sell it.
I think I will give you the information exactly as it is given so you all can be loaded. Here it comes (page 26):
Where to Find Blue Drops
The most valuable items most people have found thus far are the blue drops that appear on bosses in epic instances and on elite bosses in regular instances. There are epic drops as well, though very few if any have yet been reported. For those farming gold on bosses though, the goal will always be to find and kill these epic bosses for gold. Here is a list of the best instances to go to find blue drops. Remember, in epic instances, bosses drop blues at about an 80% clip. Bosses that would normally drop blues may even drop 2 when you go into Epic mode. Epic mode is a longer, more time consuming process, but remember that with a well crewed group, you can usually come away with one blue per group member on each run at a minimum.
Level 30 Items Ymir Camps/Connals Valley
Level 40 Items Field of the Dead/Southern Section has more than 13 bosses.
Level 50 Items White Hand/Eiglophian Worm Bosses
Level 60 Items Aztels/Thunder River
Level 70 Items Aztels Fortress
And that's it!
I especially appreciate the note at level 40: Field of the Dead has more than 13 bosses.
Waow, nice... where?
A map would have been nice and how many are "more than 13"?
You have a lot of incomplete informations: make a macro for your combos when you are gathering, so the fighting time against the mob is reduced. See here (page 15 and 16):
The combat system is a bit more dynamic, meaning it takes more time and a lot more care to create a macro that effectively translates a full fight into a single key stroke. However, if you can do so, the amount of time it will save you is well worth the effort. To start, record a video of your fights with a software program like Fraps, a free and easy to use raw screen capture and game recording tool. Then, look at what you do in the game and when you're sure you have uncovered the ideal combination, put them in order and make a macro. It may seem simple, but when you add up all the little things, they can make a big difference in gold making.
And no more than that.
First, he doesn't give you a gold tip, but a fight tip.
Second, he doesn't tell you how to make a macro.
But of course, the fact is, this kind of macros can't be made, so...
I could keep on going like that for a while because this book is filled with useless tips, outdated knowledge and wrong informations. It is totally useless.
The only positive thing about this book is that you get quite a laugh when you read it.
I asked for a refund from clickbank. $37.00 for this is $38.00 too many.
If you really want to try it anyway, you can buy it here.
