Aged Care In Australia

Australia, like most countries around the world

, has a growing aged population. The return to family life after six years of conflict in World War II led to a population explosion known as the Baby Boomer years. More than four million Australians were born between 1946 and 1961 and many of these people are now approaching retirement age. Plus advances in medical science have enabled people to live longer. Turning 100 years is no longer as rare as it used to be. The ageing of the Baby Boomers coupled with the ability to prolong life means an ever increasing number of older people are going to need services. This trend will continue to grow until, in 2051, more than one quarter of the population will be older than 65 years.

Employees and volunteers working within the health sector provide a wide range of services and support aimed at enabling older people to remain living in their homes for longer than ever before. Support provided to people in their own homes is known as Community Care. Quality care is also provided within nursing homes and hostels (aged care facilities). This is referred to as Residential Care.

However, the Aged and Community Care Sector doesnt only support older people. It also helps a significant number of younger people with disabilities to live independently and participate in community life. Importantly, it also provides direct assistance to the thousands of family and friends who support older people, frail aged people and younger people with disabilities.

The men and women who are employed or volunteer in the Aged and Community Care Sector gain personal satisfaction knowing they provide flexible, timely support which is individually tailored to meet the physical, psychological and social needs of each person they assist. The sector is about maximising, restoring and maintaining the independence and wellbeing of individual people. The work culture is about promoting personal empowerment and valuing each persons individual strengths and differences. Its a huge task that can only increase over time, because people are living longer.

In Australia, people working in the Aged and Community Care Sector could be employed by:The State or Territory GovernmentLocal Government (local Councils), orNon-Government organisations which are either Not-for-profit organisations (usually faith based or charitable organisations) or Private businesses which operate in similar ways to other commercial operationsThe Australian Government through the Department of Health and Ageing provides funding for Residential Care and various support packages to people living in their own homes such as Extended Aged Care at Home (EACH); EACH dementia (EACH-D); Community Aged Care Package (CACP) and National Respite for Carers Program. The Australian Government also works with the various State and Territory Governments through the Home and Community Care Program (HACC).In broad terms, the Aged and Community Care sector provides help and support in settings such as private homes, community centres and residential facilities but within each of these settings there are also a number of options. To say that the choice of work type is diverse is really an understatement. It could be said that the Aged and Community Care Sector has something for everyone.by: Rojer Fredlieb
