Agile Software Development Helps With Project Tracking

For software development companies that specialize in creating business-critical

solutions their customers rely on, sound project management and project tracking is crucial to ensuring employees assigned to the task hit deadlines and other goals. The Worcester Business Journal recently released a report explaining three key principles for project managers to account for when managing a team charged with the important task.

Even the most well-planned projects will encounter delays. It's inevitable that an employee will call-in sick at some point, or some other unexpected issue arises, so project managers must be sure that team members can fill in for their coworkers when need be. If not, production can reach a halt that paralyzes a project and angers customers waiting for a new solution be released.

"It's easy to imagine the techno-perfect-world you'd like to live in, but hard - and expensive - to get there," Susan Cramm, a blogger for the Harvard Business Review, wrote. "Be sure to make the expense worthwhile by anticipating delays and planning for them."

There are no clear guidelines for planning for delays, however, building time into the project plan that can be used for breaks if no issues arise is one simple way to prevent delays from negatively impacting the success of a project.

Task tracking is equally important for projects managers, as all employees - no matter how talented - can slack off at times. Keeping a watchful eye, while keeping from being too overbearing, can prevent team members from neglecting their responsibilities. Within software development, a single missed step or cut corner can hurt a project and place an undue burden on bug trackers workers responsible for fine-tuning new solutions.

Citing project management expert Brad Egeland, WBJ reports project managers must 'step back' as the final step to fully assess a situation. Doing this will allow him or her to notice issues with projects that are negatively impacting the progress of a new project. From that point, it's critical that any issues are eliminated immediately, so the entire project doesn't suffer due to the problems of a single employee or issue.

"We have all learned along the way that proper planning costs money but it costs less than the alternative of diving in without the proper planning. In the long run, it's the project that will suffer from lack of patience and planning," Egeland wrote on his Project Management Tips blog.
