Aging In Place Remodeling

As the Baby Boomer generation ages there has been a sharp increase in the number

of remodeling projects that are commissioned to enable older people to stay in their own homes rather than have to leave them to live in senior facilities.

Even though they may be totally fit and healthy at the moment homeowners are realizing that may not always be the case and are preparing their homes in anticipation.

One of the biggest challenges is what to do about a home that has a stepped entry when eventually one of the homes occupants may have to use a wheelchair or other walking aid. A ramp would be the obvious and most cost effective solution, but installing one does little for a homes curb appeal.

So instead remodeling professionals are approaching the step challenge in a different manner. Using bricks, pavers, concrete or similar building materials steps are being replaced with elegant raised walkways that serve the same purpose as a traditional ramp but are far more attractive.

There is another advantage to replacing a stepped entrance. Should a homeowner ever decide to sell their property and move on, their home will appeal to a wider audience.

Indoor steps and stairs are a different challenge and one not so easily solved. Having a stair lift installed is one solution and such things are becoming more affordable.

The alternative is to plan for a time when a homes occupant may be confined to a single story of the home. To do this a lower level bathroom may have to be enlarged or added and a room that currently may be in use for other purposes such as a dining room or study might have to be converted for sleeping use.

The best person to help an individual homeowner determine what will have to be done to their home to make it more accessible is a certified aging in place remodeling specialist. These professionals have made a commitment to implementing the best and most innovative ways to ensure that people can stay in their own homes for as long as possible.
