In an attempt to soothe people's fears, dentists refer to the drill as a "hand piece." Regardless, simply calling it a hand piece rather than a drill does not eliminate the frightening noise the drill makes. The high-pitched whirring of the machine, no matter how small it is, can create an intense visceral fear in most people. The idea of drilling into the tooth flies against every human instinct we have.

Many people avoid the dentist for this very reason, thereby leading to even more extensive dental issues as the problem goes untreated and worsens. Dental science is well aware of the fright that people experience, and has come up with a viable alternative to the traditional drill. This new method is called air abrasion.

Air abrasion uses a small hand-held air compressor filled with a special powder. When the air stream is aimed at the problematic tooth, the gritty powder shoots out and wears away the tooth's decay. The compressor is nearly silent, and the process lacks the gut-wrenching vibration usually caused by a traditional drill. More good news is that air abrasion doesn't require anesthesia, and so those who are uncomfortable with shots can forgo that particular experience as well as the drill. It should be noted, however, that for some people the air abrasion process can cause increased tooth sensitivity.

The air abrasion can be adjusted depending on the individual issue being addressed. The dentist can control the strength of the air blast and also the grit size of the powder that's being used. Small areas of decay will require only a moderate air blast in combination with a finer powder.
