An air bearing is a device that is designed to be inflated with compressed air to initially form a seal with the floor surface and, with further inflation, to create a thin film of air between the bearing and the floor surface causing the air bearing to float in a similar way to a hovercraft. We can also say that an air bearing is a non-contacting system where air acts as the lubricant that separates the two surfaces in relative motion.

Air bearings have the following characteristics and advantages:

Air Bearing : technology offers real advantages to applications where the demand for accuracy, speed and reliability is crucial.

The performance given by West wind air bearing technology regularly exceeds the parameters offered by conventional bearing systems, with speeds ranging from 0 to 300,000 rpm, powers range from 10w to 30kw, load capacities of up to 150 kg radial and 500 kg axial, and bearing stiffnesss of up to 12kg/m radial and 50 kg/m axial.

An air bearing cannot work on its own. It is designed to be fitted into a load module that is strong enough to hold out heavy loads being placed upon it. An air bearing also needs to have some sort of air flow control. This is usually done by way of an air flow control valve fitted into the load module or via a remote control system.

There are two types of air bearing systems:
