, was earlier known as Punya-Nagiri or Queen of Deccan. A major attraction in Pune is Aga Khan Palace, where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned for participating in Quit India Movement in 1942. Pune boasts of the prestigious Film institute which has produced several top class actors to Bollywood.

The distance from Pune to Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu, is about 1091 km. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, Chennai or Chennaipattinam, it is believed, got its name from Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple.

There are four to five flights daily between the two cities. It takes only less than one hour and 45 minutes by flight to reach the destination from Pune. The distance by air is approximately 925 km.
Chennai is well connected with Pune by rail also. There are three direct daily trains from Pune to Chennai. They are Mumbai-Chennai Mail (No.11027), Mumbai Chennai Express (No.11041) and Dadar-Chennai Egmore Express (No.12163). Pune-Chennai Central Express (No.06027) is a weekly train running on Fridays. The distance from Pune to Chennai by rail is about 1088 km. It takes more than 23 hours to reach the destination from Pune.
Though the distance from Pune to Chennai is about 1100 km, travel by road is popular primary because of the inadequate availability of railway reservation. There is no state transport bus in this route. Travel agencies operate bus services and they charge a fare of above Rs.1250 per passenger for the air-conditioned buses.
Taxi cabs are also available in plenty in Pune to travel to Chennai. Taxi cabs charge a rate ranging from Rs.15 to Rs.22 per kilometre depending on the type of vehicle the travellers hire. On the other hand, bigger vehicle like seven-seater Tavera charges a rate of Rs.27000 for the trip.
The national highway (NH4) road route from Pune passes through Satara, Kolhapur, Dharwad, Haveri, Devangere, Chritradurga, Tumkur, Krishnagiri and Vellore before reaching Chennai. NH9 is another road route between the two cities.
