Airport Transportation Shouldn't Be All That Difficult

Quite frankly, there are days when all of us would like airport transportation in

the form of a nice comfy wheelchair, ideally with someone to push it while we nap. Well, ideally one of those big six seater things with the flashing lights, but only if it goes really fast so we don't have to worry about getting to the plane on time.

Airports are increasingly complex for people with mobility issues. What with earlier and earlier arrival times to accommodate various exciting and sometimes mutually contradictory safety rules. I've learned that this is actually often deliberate, to keep them on their toes.

Who knew? - and greater expense involved in checking bags, if a person has a difficult time walking a long distance, it can be that much harder if they're trying to carry even one bag that might otherwise have been checked.

Airport staff is exceptionally good at trying to accommodate people and do their best by those who need their assistance, but sometimes the world gets in the way. Current models of airport transportation are the same as those for personal use, which despite the value that they bring to the lives of people who might otherwise be unjustly and unfairly marginalized and confined, is not always ideal for the temporary transport of a diverse range of people.

The biggest problem with existing airport transport wheelchairs is space. Currently everything is at a premium, and airport space is no exception. Having to set aside large swathes of room for these chairs can cause more than one type of problem.

The first is that this space has to be big enough to hold sufficient chairs to meet the needs of the airport's customers. The second problem stems off that, meaning that there's likely to be only a few locations, because they also have to be secured so that the wheelchairs are not "accidentally borrowed" and never returned.

Both of these aspects of the service is that, especially in a large airport, it may take some time to track down a wheelchair and bring it to the needed location. This can lead in turn to other delays, missed flights and frustrated passengers and personnel.

The answer to this is a type of airport transportation wheelchair that is easy and compact to store and secure. There is a type of chair that can be nested and locked like the baggage carts that can be rented almost anywhere in an airport. Nor do they take up much more room.

This frees up space and makes location much more convenient. Because these chairs have multiple anti-theft features, including only being moved by an attendant, and despite the easy nesting and storage, not folding up to fit in a trunk, they could even be rentable to airport customers, thus freeing up the staff. This last, of course, would depend on safety regulations, but regardless, there is a substantial time and money savings involved.

It is true that such airport transportation chairs cost more than standard wheelchairs, but because of these features, as well as a much more sturdy construction and a large storage space underneath for things like baggage, the short-term cost is rapidly offset in the long run.
