. Born in Tulu speaking manglorean family, Aishwaryas dad was in the Merchant Navy and her mother is a housewife. Her brother, Aditya who is three years elder to her, is in the Merchant Navy as an engineer. She did her schooling in Arya Vidya Mandir high school but later gave up her higher education in favor of modeling.

Aishwarya Rai was in the midst of completing her graduation in architecture when Miss India beckoned her. She was the runner-up in the contest and later went on to be crowned the Miss World. She later joined film industry and chose acting as her profession. Her first movie was a tamil flick Iruvar. Aishwarya Rai has acted in more than 40 movies like the critically acclaimed Chokher Bali and the blockbusters like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Dhoom II, Guru and Jodha Akbar and the latest Guzaarish. She has also acted in Hollywood projects like The Last Lagion and The Pink Panther. Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone are considered as the next generation actresses who could step into her shoes in terms of versatility, acting abilities and glamour.

Aishwarya Rai was rumored to be dating heart-throb Salman Khan and later Viviek Oberoi but has never confirmed the rumors maintaining a dignified silence on all. In 2007, she got married to the scion of the Bachhan clan, Abhishek Bachhan. In 2003, Aishwarya Rai was the first Indian to be a jury on the Cannes panel of judges. 2009 saw Aishwarya Rai being awarded the Padma Shri for her acting prowess and contributions to the cinematic world.

Apart from Indian glory, Aishwarya has also been the most sought after personality in the Indian movie industry. She was also chosen as "100 Most Influential People by TIME magazine in 2004. She also graced the covers of the prestigious magazine. Aishwarya Rai was the second person from Bollywood whose wax statue was built by London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum. The first was her father-in-law Amitabh Bachhan.
