Ajmer is important to different people for different reasons. For some, it is a spiritual centre. For others, it is a conduit between Jaipur and Udaipur. But the one landmark which overwhelms everything else about the city is the famous Dargah Sharif. This tomb of Saint Muinnudin Chisti, draws countless woshippers from all parts of the world. Every year, particularly during the annual festival of Urs, people gather here to offer their respects and ask for the Saint's blessings. A short drive from the Dargah is an astonishingly beautiful Soni ji ki Nasiyan also called Nasiyan. Although revered as a temple, Nasiyan is similar to a museum in most respects.

The complex houses a mesmerizing gold-plated creation, which is an attempt in recreating "God's home" as conceived by Jain fables. Offering a splendid view of Ajmer is the Taragarh Fort, which is one of the oldest forts in India and possibly the world. The grand fort sits atop the Aravali range, and is popular for its enchanting view of the sunset. The fort is also home to Miran Saheb ki Dargah, which draws the saint's followers in large numbers. Walking distance from the Dargah Sharif is Dhai din ka Jhopra, a Hindu monument which was demolished by Mughal rulers. And, in two and a half days (dhai din) it was replaced by the creation that stands here today.

Besides historical monuments, Ajmer also has the placid Anasagar Lake, which has a enigmatically calming effect on people. It is an ideal spot for evening strolls and a peaceful place to enjoy the cool breeze while feasting on local street food. For most people, a visit to Ajmer is incomplete without a drive to Pushkar.

The city is merely eleven kilometers from Ajmer and the drive offers you beautiful views of the Aravali mountain range. Besides the Brahma temple and world-famous Camel Fair, which is held annually, Pushkar is also tremendously popular amongst tourists for its vibrant and bohemian character. With an incomparable aura of spirituality and peace, this historical city is more than a checkbox on an itinerary.

It is a city which you remember, long after you leave. And return to, every chance you get. PRACTICAL INFORMATION There is no airport in Ajmer. But it is extremely well-connected by trains and highways to all major cities. The nearest airport is in Jaipur. Ajmer is 138 kms from Jaipur, 392 kms from Delhi and 233 kms from Bikaner. Udaipur is a 5-hour drive away. With the exception of Tarahgarh Fort, most tourist destinations are located close to one another.

Being well-informed about the distances helps when using auto-rickshaws or taxis. Tourists should avoid visiting the Dargah Sharif on Fridays and Sundays. It is also teeming with pickpockets, touts and con-artists. It is advised to cover your head before entering the shrine. If possible, leave your mobile phones and bags in your cab as they are not allowed inside some places.
