Al-qaeda Is Not Getting Many Results In Their Online Recruiting Efforts

Al-Qaeda has long used the internet as a recruiting platform

. It has provided them some results which have caused several US citizens to rally to their cause and commit acts of terror here in the United States. I am sure that there are many who follow their web sites and may have sympathy to their causes. The difference is that reading and following is easy to do but convincing people to strap on a suicide bomb and commit a terrorist act is something totally different.

People may follow and sympathize with the cause but most of it is a passing concern. Jihadists fail to realize that Westerners are not grown in the hard core bed of anti American propaganda that they are. Americans are not fed a diet of hatred and religious propaganda from childhood so it is not easy to persuade them to join the cause.

There were several cases in the United States where Americans were persuaded by Anwar al-Awlaki to commit acts of terror. Awlaki was killed in a US drone attack and they dont have another with his savy to direct the campaign. In the case of Major Nidal Hassan Awlaki was the prominent catalyst. This was one of only one or two cases in which they were successful. It seems that the effort to recruit terrorists over the internet requires a lot of work in order to gain results. In the case of Major Hassan the results were devastating.

This is good for the United States because they cant control what happens over the internet or who looks at it. There is also no way to control how a person will react to what they read. It would be too easy for a person who has the intention of doing harm to do so. As a matter of fact it is not possible to prevent this type of terror attack.

The Center for Naval Analysis (CNA) has researched the internet campaign of al-Qaeda and continues to monitor the effects of this program.

The advantage that the United States has in this situation is that al-Qaedas internet recruiting is easy to monitor. The best way to handle it is to allow it to take its course and keep a keen eye on what actually transpires. The nature of their efforts allows the US Intelligence to track it and follow it to where it ends.

The nature of the war on terror has caused the United States to grow and change the way that it does business. The US has had to develop new techniques and technologies to deal with al-Qaeda which is good in many ways. They have begun to exact a toll on al-Qaeda which is so severe that I dont think that they can ever recover from.

The US has learned that the proper way to fight this war is not by using large numbers of troops and zillions of bombs to obliterate the enemy. Since this is a different type of conflict it requires drastically different tactics.

The drone is the best weapon to be born of this campaign. Drones have been around for quite a while but this campaign is what brought them into prominence. T

The US has also developed advanced intelligence gathering tactics and techniques which have served them well in this war. Tracking down al-Qaeda has become a task that the US has become very adept at performing.
