ALARMING AND BOOMING MUSIC PIRACY

Music is a form of art and it incorporates the use of instruments and vocals in a well, continous and structured manner. Its common components are pitch, rhythm and texture. At least everyone listens to music whether it is gospel or secular. One of the main challenges facing the music industry is music piracy. According to web definition music piracy is an act of duplicating or distributing sound records illegally without the consent of its producers. Music piracy is an economic crime and the victims are liable to public prosecution.

Apparently music professionals are supposedly to be the highest paying jobs worldwide. Unfortunately music piracy has crimpled down the market. The life of musicians is at a stake because they don't get enough form their hard work. It is a stranglehold to combat this economic crime. Music pirates have established black markets and developed strong ties with their customers' .This problem has affected mostly the developing countries. This can be compared to the poor living standards of the African countries. Let us assume a household lives slightly above a dollar a day then a new DVD or cd is released on the market and its cost is USD 50 then a pirated one costs USD 15,obviously this type of household which is need of entertainment would prefer to go for the cheaper one.

For this crime to be fought fully, the music artists should be realistic when they are setting prices for their music products. Before they release new albums they already know the target group whether they are the youths, men, women or older people. They should bear in mind that not all people can afford to purchase these products with this high prices and this is where the concept of price discrimination can come in. They can decide that different markets will get the products with different prices. It is sad because people are always ready with empty cds and cassettes once they hear that new music is out. In addition the music artists should do a thorough marketing for their products as this will sensitize and empower those being targeted.

Most African countries are losing millions due to tax evasion on pirated music products. Most of the pirated music products are imported although a good number of them are reproduced locally using more sophisticated technology and upgraded methods in a manner that no one can notice. Most African streets including Nairobi the capital of Kenya reflect this alarming and booming business. The pirated markets are released on the markets just after they are released. In relation to that the Kenya police are also working hard to combat this crime which is highly carried out in cyber cafs. In conclusion the public should be aware that music piracy is stealing someone's product and that the law is never going to be lineate to such victims. The producers work tirelessly day and night in order to come up with something good and stylish but in the long run they get the opposite of what they thought.
