Alice in Wonderland 2010 DVD - An Honest Review
Alice in Wonderland 2010 DVD - An Honest Review
As far as Childrens DVDs go, this is a great childrens movie where nineteen year old Alice goes back to the wonderland after persuading herself that her original visit at age six, was only a dream. There have been mixed critiques on this movie, some say it's bad and nothing much like the original (remember it wasn't meant to be) and many say it's a brilliant follow up to the popular Lewis Carroll books.
We feel that this film is a great mixture of the two famous books, "Alice in Wonderland" and "Alice through the Looking Glass". We did enjoy most of the film, although for adults, it may be a bit of a let-down in comparison to the books. However, as far as Childrens DVDs go, Alice in Wonderland 2010 is certainly one to see and we consider it to be one of the best Tim Burton motion pictures ever made.
However; this film is a lot more dark than others that you may have witnessed including the Walt Disney version. It is probably not a great film for younger children. A number of the fight scenes are perhaps not suitable for everyone but the PG certificate suggests this.
Children over the age of 7 or 8 shouldn't have any issues watching this motion picture with their mum and dad though. It is not frightening it's just a bit on the dark side. Mr Depp is great with this role and we have to admit, we did think (on first impressions) that he could be playing exactly the same character as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but actually, he plays a much deeper character who at times is extremely funny. As grown ups, we did laugh out loud many times throughout the motion picture which can be unusual for Childrens DVDs these days.
Mia Wasikowska, who plays Alice, is a great young actress and plays the role very well. Helena Bonham Carter is cast as the nasty Queen of Hearts from the first Alice in Wonderland story. But, we felt her acting was more like Queenie from Blackadder. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this character, you may find the pitch of her speech and gestures a little aggravating nevertheless for us it was very amusing although in all honesty, a complete rip-off.
The CGI characters are fantastic, specially the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) and Absalom (Alan Rickman). However, when it comes to elegance, the scenery where Alice spends a lot of her time, is not competitive with, say, from the Disney motion picture. The Jabberwocky is a remarkable evil dragon-like beast who eventually appears at the end of the film and with regards to CGI, it is good not amazing.
We felt a lot of the tension and adventure was greatly akin to a Harry Potter motion picture rather than the traditional adventure of Alice in Wonderland the Disney edition. Even so, like most things, Childrens DVDs are transforming so we predicted a change on the original, much loved, Alice in Wonderland Disney movie.
In conclusion, we would advise this for kids over the age of about seven and we would suggest that the PG certification is abided by. It's a terrific motion picture but if you've seen the original Disney film, or read the Lewis Carroll publications, then do not get your hopes up! Childrens DVDs are transforming and we believe that this is a good expression of what young children expect from a movie these days.
