All About Bedding Material For Your Pet Guinea Pigs
Having a pet guinea pig is such a joy
Having a pet guinea pig is such a joy. Watching them play, eat, and scamper around in their cages is fun especially because they are so cute and cuddly. To keep your pets healthy and happy you should invest in proper bedding for them. There are many options for their bedding and this includes straw, paper, or even wood shavings.
The easiest material we can come by is paper, not to mention that it cost the least. Aside from these, paper offers a dust free smooth cushion for the guinea pigs. On top of these, paper takes in liquid when they come in contact. Before using the paper, you have to check whether the paper have ink content which can kill the guinea pig.
Others may choose shavings for the bedding. These come from wood that can be shaved in a number of ways producing a multitude of designs of the shavings.
Wood shavings also smell nice especially when made from pine trees. They are also an affordable choice although a drawback is that they tend to retain dust and can get pretty messy.
However, if you are still decided in using the shavings, you should let the scent out of the system outside of the house and letting the wood shavings dry. Remember guinea pigs have allergic reactions to some scents. It would also help minimize the effect of the scent on the guinea pig if you would use cage instead of an aquarium.
For guinea pigs, straw has a dual purpose: bedding and source of food. Straw from hay can be easily eaten by rodents while they sleep on it.
The only concern is that hay must be kept dry. Otherwise, the straw will easily get ruined. Since guinea pig urinates and water from the container leaks, maintaining a straw bedding may be difficult.
Never use sawdust as bedding. These are too fine and the guinea pigs will inhale the dust. Also, don't use hard materials as your guinea pigs might poke their eyes on them.
