Going green is a movement that entails a change in the way we consume energy in our daily lives. Because of the damage to the environment done by the burning of fossil fuels in order to generate energy to power the machines that make our modern, everyday life possible, more and more people are slowly moving towards alternative energy resources that don't do that much environmental damage. A modern house that embraces the green philosophy can have a variety of unique characteristics. One of these is the way that the house uses devices and fixtures that have high energy efficiency. Instead of using regular light bulbs, these houses use compact fluorescent light bulbs. CFLs are ideal to use as lighting sources because of its high energy efficiency. It gives out more light for lesser use of electric energy. Aside from CFLs, modern houses that embrace the green lifestyle are well insulated. A well insulated house means that the heat generated by the furnace is efficiently utilized. These leads to less energy used for heating as compared to a house with minimal or inefficient insulation. A well insulated house can use up to 40% less energy for heating.

Green energy is more than just using CFLs and house insulation. It's also as simple as not leaving your television and other electric appliances in standby mode. Leaving them in standby mode consumes energy that is wasted. Other sources of wasted energy come from battery chargers for mobile phones and laptops that are not unplugged from the wall outlet when they are no longer connected to the devices that they are charging. These are called power leeches as they leech energy that is not put to use. Even though a single battery charger consumes a small amount of power while it's not charging a device, the combined power wastage of thousands of unplugged chargers is significant.

Recycling is another aspect of green energy thinking. By recycling items, less energy is used by manufacturers as fewer items are needed. Modern green thinking houses use a system of waste segregation in order to minimize the volume of waste that they send to the garbage dump. Biodegradables like food, waste paper, and other items that rot away are separated and used as compost for gardening. Recyclable materials like paper, aluminum cans, certain plastics, and a variety of other items are also sorted and sent to the recycling plant. With careful selection, these houses can significantly lower the amount of waste you take out for the garbage truck.
