. HP Slate 500 is one of the most popular Microsoft Tablet PCs, which have been released in the market in the last decade. In January,2010, arrival of slate PC was announced in the Electronics Consumer Show. Formally, it was launched on 22nd October,2010 as a business device. Smaller than an Apple iPad, it looks like a laptop without keyboard.

Brief History

Initially, the design of Slate 500 PC was started, based on e-reader concept. Later on, after lot of market research, HP management decided to change the design of the product. The goal was to design a PC, using which the user would be able to browse the internet, listen to music, watch video and have a good media experience.

Hardware Features

Slate 500 PC features a 3 megapixel camera, which is located on its back panel. On the front panel, there is another camera, which is basically a 0.3 megapixel web-cam. The 8.9inch multi-touch capacitive screen, which is enclosed by a brushed aluminum frame, supports 1024x600 pixel resolution with pen support and digitizer. This device draws power from a 2 cell polymer battery. The main processor, used in the slate PC, is an Intel Atom Z540 processor of 1.86GHz. Main memory devices are 2GB of DDR2 RAM and 64GB of on-board solid state flash ROM. With dimensions of 23.4cm of height,14.5cm of width and 1.4cm of depth, this tablet weighs about 700gm,though it looks quite bulky. The backside of the device is wrapped with textured rubber which makes it easier for the user to hold the device firmly. The Home button is located the right top panel. Though the device does not have 3G connectivity, it features built-in Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 and Bluetooth technology for wireless communication. By using the Bluetooth technology, a wireless mouse or keyboard could be attached to the tablet. For resolving any hardware problem, an experienced HP support provider should be consulted. Software Features

Windows 7 operating system, which supports native touch technology, runs on the tablet. It has many unique features, such as improved touch and handwriting recognition, virtual hard disk support, multi-core processor support, enhanced boot performance, Direct Access and improved kernel. Other than these features, it also supports the systems, which use numerous heterogeneous graphics cards from several vendors, the latest version of Windows Media Center, the XPS Essentials Pack, Windows PowerShell and a scientific calculator. Various new items, such as System Icons, Credential Manager, Biometric Devices, Workspace Center, Display Color Calibration Wizard, Clear Type Text Tuner, etc have been added to the Control Panel. Windows Action Center manages the security and maintenance of the computer. Raw image format is supported by the addition of image decoders, which are designed, based on Windows Imaging Component. These image decoders are used to display raw image thumbnails and slide-shows in the Windows Photo Viewer and Windows Media Center. The task-bar is integrated with buttons for pinned applications.
