Beloved St. Louis Pop Warner Coach Dan Lipsky
St. Louis native Dan Lipsky has loved football since he was a young boy. He played Pop Warner, he played high school football, and he hoped to be recruited for college football. When he wasn't, he tried to walk on at Miami of Ohio. That turned out to be an unsuccessful endeavor. Lipsky did not let that derail his love of and passion for the gridiron. He has been a Bengals season ticket owner for more years than anyone would ever want to admit outside of Ohio. Dan's friends all know that when they have a question about football schedules, football stats, where any NFL player went to college or any other football related conundrum, Dan is the man to ask.
A man with such an inherent love of football must have sons who play the game, right? No, irony dealt Lipsky another blow. Lipsky and his wife have three daughters. For the record, Lipsky wants everyone to know that he loves his daughters completely and would never wish they were boys. Still, Lipsky's extreme passion for football had to find an outlet. In 2001 Lipsky went back to his roots and became a Pop Warner coach. In nine years he has led his Pop Warner team to the league championship seven times. Friends and rival coaches tease him and call Lipsky the Pete Carroll of Pop Warner football. Indeed, Lipsky's Pop Warner success has eerily rivaled the former University of Southern California coaches' success while leading the Trojans.
Pete Carroll accomplished so much during his time at Southern California," Lipsky said. "If I had even a fraction of his success on this smaller gridiron stage, I'd be a very fulfilled man." Carroll is one of the most legendarily successful FBS (formerly known as Division I) college coaches of all time. In his eight year tenure at USC Carroll led the Trojans to seven consecutive Pac-10 titles, two BCS Championship Games, the 2003 AP National Champion, the 2004 BCS (since vacated) and AP National Champion, seven consecutive AP top-4 finishes, six BCS bowl victories, seven consecutive BCS bowl appearances, a national-record 33 consecutive weeks as the AP's number one ranked team, three Heisman trophy winners (Reggie Bush's since abdicated), a winning record of 83-19, a winning record of 14-2 against traditional rivals Notre Dame and UCLA, 25 first team All Americans, and 53 players selected in the NFL Draft. Oh, and the only team in history to win three consecutive Rose Bowl Games; to name but a handful of Carroll's accomplishments at Troy.
Dan Lipsky broke out in an ear to ear grin when listening to Pete Carroll's list of accomplishments. "Man, to play for him, or coach with him while he was at USC, that must have been the most amazing experience ever," he said. But what Lipsky, in his modesty, fails to grasp is that in the St. Louis Pop Warner community, he is Pete Carroll. Lipsky has led his team to seven consecutive league championships, winning five of them. He has had players win the MVP award in seven of nine seasons. His former players have gone on to play high school football as well as both FBS and FCS (formerly known as Division II) football at the collegiate level.
Lipsky is a beloved figure in the Pop Warner community. His modesty may be his most endearing trait. When contacted for comment on this story, former player after former player had nothing but positive and inspirational things to say about "Coach Dan." Most frequently, he was lauded for being the boys' "second dad" and "someone you could really talk to about anything, not just football." And that, more than prowess on the gridiron is what young men need. Coach Lipsky has taught legions of St. Louis boys the meaning of friendship and teamwork and we all hope he continues to for many many years.
