All About Wireless Cameras

here is new type of camera that's getting a lot of attention in the security camera field, they are known as wireless cameras. These cameras have certain advantages that have caught the public's attention, but they have several disadvantages that severely limit their effectiveness. In this article, we'll examine their strengths and weaknesses in more detail.

The biggest advantage of wireless security cameras is that they aren't limited by wires, as the name implies. Other types of surveillance cameras are connected to a recording and display device through cables. This means that wireless cameras can be mounted anywhere without having to worry about where and how to run cables for them because, the signal is transmitted with a broadcast signal. They also use at least a five to one compression ratio to maintain good video quality. The downside of this higher compression rate is that it causes these cameras to use up storage space much faster then wired cameras.

Below we're going to take a look at a few other disadvantages of these wireless cameras.

Powering them--

Even though they don't require you to run any cables, they still need a power source. There are two possible ways to do this, find a power outlet close to where the camera is mounted or some wireless cameras are powered by batteries. The problem with finding an outlet is this can be difficult and limit the options for installation locations. This takes away some of their biggest advantage, being able mount them anywhere with in a certain range of the receiver. The problem with powering them with batteries is that these cameras consume more power then wired cameras. This means that you have to constantly monitor and change the batteries.

Vulnerability--

Most of the time these cameras are small and portable which makes them easy to install, but they can be targeted by those who wish to commit criminal acts. Since there are no cables to hold them in place, they can be simply removed and stolen.

Maintenance--

Wireless cameras are often designed tough enough to be mounted outside but, the technology is still relatively new. This means that their internal mechanisms are delicate, requiring continual monitoring and possibly upgrades to both the software and hardware.

Signal Disruption--

Since cables aren't used with these cameras, the signal is sent through the airwaves. These airwaves are often congested with signals from microwaves, cell or portable phones, wireless networks and other wireless devices that work on or around the same frequenc. Video footage can be blocked entirely or the quality can seriously be harmed when this happens. Poor weather can also cause signal problems.

Unsecured Footage--

Tech savvy thieves can jam the wireless signals with the aid of an inexpensive device. Not only can these signals be blocked, they can also be hacked into and stolen. Most of the time people want their live camera feeds and video footage to be private. This risk remains even if the footage is transmitted through a password protected secure wireless network.

Hidden expenses--

You may also have expenses that you aren't prepared for with these cameras. Since the technology behind these cameras is still fairly new the cameras may not work with the monitors, DVR or computers you already have, and you may end up having to buy all new equipment.

After really examining the facts about wireless cameras, it seems clear that technology still has some issues that need to be addressed. One thing is for sure, they don't offer the consistent reliability that wired cameras do.
