Huge augers are available that are designed for planting large trees and are capable of drilling holes that are several feet deep and about a foot and a half in diameter.

When using the small garden augers a variable speed drill is used as the power source. The really big augers require a very strong rotation force and would use something like a tractor shaft as their power source. No matter which model is used they require some sort of power source to drive them.

Most garden augers are not designed to work in rocky soil or highly compacted or dry soil, but when used on previously cultivated soil this tool can speed up many common tasks. Garden augers are used commonly for by home gardeners when planting their gardens.
