All You Need To Know About Teacup Puppies

Teacup is a term people use to describe or refer to small dogs or also micro puppies and minis

. But let me tell you that there actually is no such breed of dogs called teacup. People often think that there is some specific diversity among Maltese or a teacup Yorkshire terrier and a Maltese or a regular toy Yorkshire terrier. All the Maltese and Yorkie come under toy breeds. Teacup can be said as a made up term that is being now used to portray puppies or dogs that count under a certain weight that is normal for a certain breeds standard.

Taking an example would be a Maltese or a Yorkie puppy that is described as a teacup if it weighs less than 4 pounds after fully grown up. Now the AKC standards describe the breed standard of these two dogs as not to exceed more then seven pounds after fully grown up. Teacup puppies that are fully-grown and stay under 4 pounds are said to be vulnerable towards many health problems compared to the ones that cross 4 pounds and reach up to 7 pounds, says most of the breeders. Runts of the litter is a line used for these Yorkshire and Maltese teacup puppies; they might experience organ failures or other birth defects that is a normal thing among them.

Another surprising thing is that intentional breeding can be done in order to raise up teacup puppies but it would only happen if two runts mate that would promote the bad genes even more so breeders oppose this idea. Remember that a good and reputable breeder would not ever encourage bad breeding in order to produce teacup puppies on purpose, he would always keep up good quality and promote good genes to get the teacup puppies that carry good temperament and meet the breeding standards nicely.

By all this I do not mean that all the teacup puppies weighing less than four pounds when grown fully are unhealthy; some of them are. Every once in a while a pair would produce teacup puppies; we can say that it is similar to pre-mature births in humans; not necessarily unhealthy. When picking up a teacup puppy like a Yorkie or a Maltese just consider the temperament factor before looking at the size. Size can be taken care of and the problems can be solved but if a teacup puppy has temperament issues, then it might be a big headache to deal for you.
