When the perfumer is given the task to create a particular perfume or cologne he or she is provided with the buyers specifications with respect to the statement that the product is to make to its intended audience. Some considerations which will be addressed are: the target group of consumers along with the audience that the cologne is to appeal to, the personality characteristics of the cologne itself and of its intended audience, the time period in which it is to be used, and the circumstances under which it will be used. The perfumer is of a necessity is a vast resevoir of experience in creating fragrances. He or she has to have a sharp sense of smell and an in depth expertise of the special effects of various fragrances on peoples emotions, and moods. He or she will therefore use his expertise extensively to create a cologne which meets the specifications of the manufacturer. The perfumer has to be familiar with the fine nuances of the cologne, the special effects of distinctive ingredients, and the special effects and nuances of combinations of ingredients. He or she has to be imtimitely familiar with the different effects and nuances of the fragrance with the passing of time and the effects that different combinations of ingredients will have on each other.

After making an allowance for all of these factors among others the perfumer needs to come up with the exact combination of ingredients to create the desired effect. This is a process which may perhaps take months or even years to accomplish. A perfume or cologne can conceivably hold hundreds of special ingredients in hundreds of various combinations. This makes it virtually impossible for another perfumer to correctly duplicate the fragrance.

There are several types of special effects which various ingredients are used to produce. Primary scents are the basic scents used to compose fragrances. They are the base fragrances. They can be added to or modified to create special special effects.

Modifiers are used to enhance or add character to a primary bouquet. For model, a modifier will cause the difference between coconut, French coconut, black coconut, or Sudanese coconut. Modifiers are also used to change the character of a fragrance from sweet to citrus and so on and so forth.

Blenders are used to help to manage the transition between fragrances. They can help teansition fragrances when they are mixed with other fragrances or over a period of time. The perfumer has an intimate expertise of the insinuating special effects of blenders and has to be able to apply them in the correct amount and at the right time to obtain the desired effect.

Fixatives have a very important function in creating fragrance. The fixative will enhance the primary fragrance in various ways. Fixatives are often used to provide a boost to the primary fragrance.
