All You Need to Know about Sodium formaldehyde Sulfoxylate

SFS or Sodium formaldehyde Sulfoxylate is also sometime known as sodium hydroxymethyl sulfinate and used as a reducing agent mainly for manufacturing of rubber, polymers, plastics, adhesives, paints, and coatings. It is water soluble and usually sold in dehydrate form. Many vendors offer it in varied concentrations that range from stabilized liquid form to dry powdered form.

Originally, it was used as industrial bleaching agent and as a reducing agent for vat dying. Now days, it is dominatingly used as a reducing agent in redox-initiator systems for emulsion polymerization. It is also used as a water conditioner for aquariums and is known to rapidly reduce chlorine and chloramines and reacts with ammonia to form the mild aminomethylsulfinate ion. It is also highly useful in pharmaceutical formulation as an antioxidant. It works as activating agent for production of styrene-butadise rubber and synthetic resin. Many commercial manufactures use it as a decolorizing agent for some organic matters, for example, sugar making and food industries. Under special conditions, it can be used to replace sodium hydrosulfite.

It is, however, very important to pay special attention while storing Sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate. It needs to be stored in a dry and cool place and protected from moisture. Also, it should be kept away from the exposure to direct sunlight. Be sure not to store it with any kind of oxidant or acid. Also, any type of acidic vapor should not be present in the storeroom where it is placed
