All You Wanted To Know About Christmas
The season to be jolly is just around the corner and it's not hard to feel the buzzing cheerfulness in the air
. Many a county has already begun to put its elaborate Christmas Dcor on display. Over the years, Christmas has metamorphosed from being a purely religious commemoration to a much more inclusive festival that people of all communities in America are eager to participate in. Children and adults alike are looking forward to a month of thanksgiving, reflection and family bonding.
The Christmas Story
According to the Bible, Jesus Christ was born on the 25th of December more than two millennia back. The humble tale of the babe born in the manger still captivates the legions of followers. Most Christian families make it a point to attend Church Service on Christmas day. This is followed by a little get-together which sees the family members offer their gratitude and partake in a sumptuous feast. Even for a non-believer, the essence of the festival is easy to identify with.
Santa Claus and Christmas Gifts
The first image of Christmas that conjures up in most people's minds is that of a gregarious old Santa Claus with a sack full of goodies. The generous creature who rides in from the North Pole every year aptly symbolizes the spirit of giving that Christmas is about. The tradition of Santa Claus began with St. Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra, who showered most unfortunate children with gifts. Even today, almost every child places a Christmas stocking at his doorstep in anticipation of a reward from Santa Claus. The kids' eyes light up when they find an assortment of goodies the next morning, albeit placed there secretly by their parents. The exchange of Christmas gifts among family members is another cherished tradition that strengthens family ties over the years.
Christmas Dcor
The Christmas tree has come to be a very powerful and poignant symbol of Christmas around the world. The tradition of placing a decorated Christmas tree in one's yard can be traced back to 16th Century Germany. In fact, the Christmas tree was a tradition brought along to America by the German settlers in Pennsylvania. Indoor Christmas Trees have also risen in popularity and can be adorned with a bevy of decorative items. Hollies, Candy canes and statuettes of Angels dot the lighted trees to lend a magical aura to them. Another indispensable part of Christmas for most Christian communities is the Crib. The scene of nativity is replicated using little statues and other embellishments.
Christmas Carols
Nothing soothes the senses and invigorates the Christmas spirit like the mellow voices of carol singers. Christmas carols are traditional joyful hymns that proclaim the spirit of Christmas and usher in the festive season. The tradition of Carol singing dates back to 4th Century Rome. The unique sound of Christmas carols can be attributed to their predominantly medieval chord patterns. Just like their forefathers from centuries gone by, groups of carolers travel around a particular community and visit every home to spread the Christmas cheer. 'Jingle Bells' and 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' are some of the more popular Christmas Hymns.
