All about Pumps
In our daily life, pumps are very common to be seen. They are quite useful. A pump is a device used to move fluids, such as liquids or slurries, or gases. It displaces a volume by physical or mechanical action. Due to their different uses and functions, pumps can be classified into various types.
The most important kind is positive displacement pump. It causes a fluid to move by trapping a fixed amount of it then forcing (displacing) that trapped volume into the discharge pipe. And according to the mechanism used to move the fluid, a positive displacement pump can be further classified into Rotary-type and Reciprocating-type. Because a positive displacement pump does not have a shut-off head, it can no be operated against a closed valve on the discharge side of the pump. A positive displacement pump that operates against a closed discharge valve, will continue to produce flow until the pressure in the discharge line are increased or the line bursts or the pump is severely damaged.
Gear pump belongs to the positive displacement pump. Same like the positive displacement pump, the gear pump is also can be future classified into the external gear pumps, and the other, of course, the internal gear pump. The former use two external spur gears and the latter use an external and an internal spur gear. A gear pump uses the meshing of gears to pump fluid by displacement. Although they are not very popular in chemical installations, gear pump is one of the most common types of pumps for hydraulic fluid power applications.
Another type of positive displacement pump that needs to be mentioned is peristaltic pump. It is used for pumping a variety of fluids. How does it work? The fluid is contained within a flexible tube that is fitted inside a circular pump casing. Then the rotor with a number of "rollers", "shoes" or "wipers" attached to the external circumference compresses the flexible tube. With the turning of the rotor, the part of the tube under compression closes, thus forcing the fluid to be pumped to move through the tube.
Apart from the above mentioned types of pumps, there are still many other kinds left which are also very important and useful for certain applications. For example, Gravity pumps, Impulse pumps, and Velocity pumps, etc. All in all, all the types of pumps have typical applications and functions. When buy them, you should try to choose the appropriate one to meet your requirements.
