For the first time in Dubai, a Barbie Exhibition showcased how the most famous plastic lady in the world has evolved, as well as her fabulous wardrobe
Every girl remembers her first Barbie doll. Mine had lovely blonde tresses and a pink (typical) nightdress with a pink (of course) teddy bear aptly calling her Bedtime Barbie'.
For many little girls, playing with Barbie is their first foray into the world of fashion. You pull that Barbie out of her box and straight away you begin to discover new clothes and fabrics, you are suddenly aware of shoes and accessories.
And when you don't get any new outfits for her, you learn to improvise with scraps of materials and you invent something new and wonderful. So it's really her clothes that fascinate and delight.
This doll has a better wardrobe than any other mortal in the world. She has collaborated with every major fashion designer from Lagerfeld, Chanel and Vera Wang to Galliano, Versace and Givenchy.
Her wardrobe contains thousands of outfits representing every fashion moment; from chic little Chanel suits, leather jackets, ball gowns, wedding dresses and various national costumes. Her shoe collection is just as vast.
Forever 18, Barbie has turned 51 this year and to celebrate her 50th year birthday last year, over 50 people were invited to design her outfits. Barbie's agent, Mattel, has taken this celebration on a worldwide tour. It started in New York at Barbie's first-ever runway show at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on Valentine's Day; it opened a store in China and visited Hong Kong; followed by a quick stop in Berlin before arriving in Dubai for the first time. Her next stop in the Middle-East is Beirut.
From November 4 for three weeks around 48 different Barbie dolls were displayed at Galeries Lafayette, Dubai Mall. One of the hottest boutiques for trendsetters, A-listers and glam fashionistas, Galeries Lafayette set up a shop-in-shop, and had the most stunningly-styled windows with life-size doll boxes and Barbie dolls, too. Barbie modelled Calvin Klein, Manish Arora, Diane Von Furstenburg, Christian Dior, Kate Spade, Armani, Anna Sui and every other designer you can name.
With a range of trend-setting Barbie outfits featured, from vintage frocks to modern gowns, the display provided a fascinating insight into the couture of the last half-century.
Barbie mesmerised everyone with her exquisite designer looks from AF Vandervorst, Karl Lagerfeld, Lutz, Carven, Junko Shimada, Emilio Pucci, Zucca, Lesage, Catherine Malandrino, Emanuel Ungaro, Cacharel, Gerard Darel, Marc Le Bihan, Maison Martin Margiela, Popy Moreni, Giambattista Valli and more.
The Diane Von Furstenberg Doll was on the go with her passport with new DVF glasses and a bag saying "Proud to be a woman"!
The Zucca Barbie was wearing a dress that we would see any girl with and Elie Saab Barbie wore a white gown decked with Swarovski crystals.
Lutz Barbie was wearing the favourite look fromLutz Fall Winter 2009. The Karl Lagerfelds Barbie had the Cabaret Repetto shoes but no fur helmet.
In most of her outfits our favourite blonde was dressed from this season's favourite colour black to the very sophisticated ostrich feather and the futuristic silver threads.
Since she first appeared in toy shops in 1959, Barbie has been a cult symbol of beauty and fashion for women of all ages. The exhibition took a sneak peek at the doll's history through the decades and her changing styles over the past 50 years.
To get that perfect Barbie look at the complementary cosmetics stations, one lady swapped her nail polish in favour of Barbie pink and had her make-up done by professionals in the Barbie style.Ladies and little girls enjoyed a range of Barbie experiences they had tea like Barbie on the gourmet floor.
