All-wheel Drive Japanese Light Pickup
A few years back a well-known and highly respected automaker designed a sport-utility
truck to add to its lineup of impressive 4-wheel drive cars and wagons. With 4 doors and a small open cargo bed the Subaru Baja became an immediate success among outdoor enthusiasts that wanted the convenience of carrying all their sports equipment in a stylish light weight pickup. Falling into the same class as the Ford Ranger and Chevy S-10 pickups the Japanese entry featured full time all wheel drive that was optional on the competitor's trucks at a markup. Although the popularity of the vehicle was embraced by the early adopters, it was not met with great reception by the traditional field of buyers who were purchasing the greater load capacity of the American made mid-size pickups.
Failing to gain sales momentum the production of the vehicle was limited to only three years. Built in Lafayette, Indiana from 2003 to 2006 the models of the Subaru Baja that are still on the road are proving that the automaker has a keen sense of style and handling, even if the popularity of the smaller truck never gained much of a following. However, even with the stiff competition of the other small trucks in its class there were some buyers that were very excited to be able to pack up their camping gear and head to the hills in their rugged, go-anywhere Subaru Baja. With the handling of a car and seating for four passengers the unibody frame took a number of its mechanical specifications from the sedan and wagon chassis' of the Legacy and Outback.
While production of the vehicle ceased in 2006 there are owners that are still driving the durable little trucks and are keeping them on the road by ordering Subaru Baja parts from dealers who carry everything from radiator caps, to air conditioning components for the pickup. Knowing that with the proper care and maintenance that their Subaru will last for at least 200,000 miles (or longer with routine oil changes and tune ups) the owners of this unique blending of car and pickup are able to keep their one of a kind lightweight automobiles ready for anything that the elements can dish out. From street driving to off-roading in the deserts of the Mexican peninsula that the automobile was named after, the Subaru Baja has shown that it is a durable vehicle that proud wears the six starred logo of the company that has continues to turn out every car it makes with a standard all-wheel drive system included for the safety of the American consumer.
