The city is the capital of Campo de Calatrava. The city is well known for the cultural and historic pieces of art and architecture. Campo de Calatrava being known as a historic region, its capital Almagro was once the headquarters of the Order of Calatrava, which was a military order formed in the 12th century to protect the Calatrava and for uniting Spain.

The name Almagro comes from the colour almagro which is the color of soil commonly found here. The city is famous for palaces and theaters. Plaza Mayor is a famous square lying in the centre of the city.

Plaza Mayor

It is a famous square situated at the centre of the city. The building is rectangular in shape and is characterized with wooden balconies. The architecture of the building is that of the Tuscan style. The National theatre museum and the Open air theatre can be found here. It is also an important centre of fairs and festivals.

Open Air Theatre

The history of this theatre dates back to the 16th century. It was a centre for organizing plays and dramas. An evidence of this can be got from the stage and the dressing rooms present here.

The building has been declared as a national monument and every year a festival known as the International Classical Theatre festival is organized to give us a glimpse of the time that existed centuries ago. The festival is being organized since 1978 and attracts many tourists from all over the world.

Hospital de San Juan

It is a modern stage and is part of the International Classical Theatre festival. More technical facilities are provided here for staging the plays. The stage was constructed in the 18th century and consists of a convent and a hospital.

Palaces

Palaces or Palacios can be found in large number in Almagro. They are beautiful and belong to different periods of time.

Marquises of Torremeja palace, Palacio de los Condes de Valdeparaso, Palacio de los Medrano and the Fcares Palace are some of the famous palaces.

Palacio de los Condes de Valdeparaso is a 17th century palace and Palacio de los Medrano belongs to the 16th century. Fcares Palace was originally warehouse and was built around 16th century.

Church of San Blas

It was originally named as the San Salvador church but was renamed in the 18th century to San Blas church, when the church was placed under him. The architecture of the church is beautiful and the interior walls are beautifully decorated with carvings and paintings.
