What is alpaca?

Most people will know what alpaca looks like but they might not know what it is actually called. Alpaca have been bred in South America for hundreds if not thousands of years. In South America they are actually known as Vicugna pacos and they look very similar to a llama only much smaller. Their fur can be either soft dense hair or long strands that look like the strands of a mop. Over the years they have been exported to various countries around the globe such as Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

What is alpaca fur used for?

Alpaca fur tends to be stronger than wool and it is used to make rugs, coats, suits, and even carpets. People who are passionate about using organic products usually prefer this fabric, due to the fact that it is actually organic by nature and is far less likely to cause an allergic reaction on sensitive skin.

Alpaca is a very good fabric to use for coats due to the fact that it can pretty much withstand any weather. The strength of the fabric ensures that it keeps the alpaca warm in the winter and cool in the summer; this is supposed to be the same when worn by humans. They can be made into slippers, blankets and a plethora of other products.

Alpaca fur has a luxurious feel to it this is why it is often used to make luxury rugs, sometimes you might see a luxurious rug that looks like sheep's wool. However majority of the time, the really high end luxury rugs are actually made using alpaca fur, if not all alpaca they can be mixed with alpaca and sheep's wool or another fabric. Alpaca fur is normally more expensive than sheep's wool but the price is justified due to the fact that it is warmer, softer to the touch and is naturally organic.
