Alternative Treatment of Menopause : Essential Fatty Acids
Alternative Treatment of Menopause : Essential Fatty Acids
A very good alternative treatment of menopause is supplementing with essential fatty acids. The essential fatty acids should be used in conjunction with your regular treatment even if you are currently on hormone replacement or any other therapy for the symptoms of menopause. The main symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, heart palpitations, night sweats, breast tenderness, insomina, mood changes, memory problems, weight gains, vaginal dryness, heavy bleeding, changes in hair and nails especially dryness, and sexual disinterest. I would even go so far as to say that everyone, male and female, old and young, healthy and ill should all ensure that they do take in sufficient quantities of essential fatty acids.
Now I hear you ask, what are the essential fatty acids ? The essential fatty acids are substances that are not produced by the human body in sufficient quantities, but is required by all healthy cells in the body. The essential fatty acids can be subdivided into 2 main groups namely the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They have to be ingested, and is required by the body to produce the steroid hormones such as testosterone, progesterone, estrogen and then also the hormone-like prostaglandins. Essential fatty acids are also necessary in the formation of cell membranes. A large number of foods that we normally eat does contain essential fatty acids in their raw form, that is grains, vegetables, nuts, fish and meat. The refining and processing of the foods result in the destruction of the essential fatty acids and the formation of hydrogenated oils that contains harmful substances for example the trans fatty acids. Trans fatty acids preventes the normal absorption of the essential fatty acids and also causes damage to the arteries. Hydrogenated oils are found in margarine.
Deficiencies of essential fatty acids result in heart disease, diabetes and certain forms of cancer. There are more than 60 conditions for which essential fatty acid supplementation is beneficial, including cluster headaches, acne, coronary artery disease, cystic fibrosis, hearing loss, tinnitus, oligomenorrhoea, onychomycosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, primary biliary cirrhosis, alzheimer's disease and depression.
Omega-3 containg products include flaxseed oil, canola oil, soybeans, walnuts, hemp seeds, dark green leafy vegetables, purslane, blackcurrant seeds, coldwater fish, s.a. salmon, trout, sardines, mackarel(there are concerns about the high levels of mercury found in some mackerel due to pollution) and cod.
Omega-6 containing products include safflower, oilve, almond, sunflower, hemp, soybean, walnut, pumpkin seed, sesame oil, flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, meat, cereals, vegetable oils, peanuts and some animal products.
The omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial in the treatment of menopause in relieving the hot flashes and night sweats, primarily, and also easing the depression associated with menopause and by lowering the risk of cardiac disease. The omega-3 fatty acids lowers the risk of cardiac disease by lowering the cholesterol levels and reducing the deposition of plaque inside the veins and arteries that causes atherosclerosis. Omega-3 reduces joint pains due to its anti-inflammatory actions. Omega-3 is also indicated for behavioural problems. The omega-6 fatty acids are beneficial in the treatment of symptoms of menopause such as mood swings, depression, irritabily and breast tenderness. The combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is essential in any diet aimed at weight loss.
In conclusion, when considering supplements to use for the alternative treatment of menopause you can consider any of the products that is mentioned here, or any combination thereof.
