Always Consider Wearing Body Protectors When Horse Riding

Decisions, decisions

Decisions, decisions. Just think of how many we have to make on any one day. Some are automatic, some we need to think about, but we always have a choice when it comes to the variety of actions we take on a given day. Safety often dictates our decisions. For example, wearing a seatbelt when we are in the car. Looking both ways before we cross the road and so on. Sometimes, however, we seem to forget about safety. Horse riding seems to be one of the activities where we make poor decisions, sometimes.

We have to be realistic and understand that horse riding is one of the more dangerous pastimes that we can participate in, but it should not be overly dangerous so long as we take the right precautions. Many generations of equestrians have gone before us and over time safety items have been developed specifically for the purpose. Body protectors and riding hats are principle here and must always be worn no matter how "casual" you believe your horse riding activities to be.

The horse riding body protector is designed to fit snugly above your regular clothes, or even beneath the outer jacket. It has been purpose designed and is padded to give you protection against injury to your back, chest and shoulder areas. When combined with a good riding hat, you have a nice level of protection for all the most vulnerable areas of your body.

Injuries are still possible even though you're wearing a body protector, but we need to try and avoid those internal injuries or more serious situations whenever we can.

Body protectors are available in a number of different safety ratings, but most people including casual riders should select the purple label. This is especially true for more inexperienced or younger people, or if you're riding on a roadway. If you are riding on soft ground or are pretty sure about how your horse will behave, you can think about the brown label. The Black label is reserved for professionals and jockeys only.

Get into the habit of wearing your body protector whenever you interact with your horse. It should become second nature, just as we all now pull on the safety belt when we get into our car. Treat your riding hat and your body protector very carefully and do not be blas about these items. You should store them carefully and make sure that they are not damaged in any way. If either one of them is subject to a hard impact of any kind, you should immediately purchase a new one and don't compromise your safety. The body protector is a very personal item. You should not expect to "borrow" somebody else's and nor should they.
