Am I Absent Minded Or Am I Really Losing It? by:Mark Colvin

To all of us the thought of not knowing if we are truly losing memory function or if we are just slightly forgetful can be very disconcerting

. Think about it this way, there is a difference between knowing where you keys are and holding your keys and not knowing what to do with them. The difference is obvious and can help settle any fears about the onset of early senility. However this is just the beginning and may only take us further down the rabbit hole to other anxieties we haven't approached.

Unfortunately our society places huge value on control and in many social circles the thought of losing control in any form or fashion is feared more than death. We at the core are scared. We are scared of losing our health, families, loved ones, jobs, money, possessions, friends, the list is personal and likely endless.

In my humble opinion I believe this is the root concern over having a disease like Alzheimer's. Nobody is immune from this fear. I would like to fantasize that under these circumstances I would be physically and emotionally accepting and go along for the ride. The kicker is that in those circumstances I am no longer in control. And under those conditions you are an unwilling participant in life. Unwilling may come across as a strong description but the reality is that you are no longer willing. Life is willing you. Life has you with out your knowledge or permission. That is scary.

There is a nugget of philosophical optimism that can be pulled from this grim cave of despair. Diseases and disabilities aside, if you know what to do with your car keys then you are ahead of many people. This is very positive. You are still in control to some extent and still willing life. Keep resolving on how you want to treat your family, friends, career, finances, etc and hopefully with a little grace you will find your keys.
