Amazing Goa Forts
Goa is mainly popular for its beaches, casinos and parties but to experience the real heritage of this beautiful state than a visit to its forts is a must. Goa Forts are a symbol of the rich and traditional past of this land which was ruled by the Portuguese. One can also call them the Portuguese Marvels.
Some famous forts of Goa are as follows:
Aguda: Located about 18 km from Panjim, Aguda was built in the year 1612 to protect the Portuguese trading interests and their goods from the Maratha and Dutch raiders. Aguda [which means water in Portuguese] was named after the natural spring located in this area. Constructed in 1864, here is the oldest lighthouse of Asia. Today travelers can see the magnificent ruins of this fort.
Chapora: Located just 10 km from the Mapusa town Chapora was built by the ruler of Bijapur Adil Shah. A red laterite bastion which adds to its beauty was later constructed by the Portuguese in 1617. The village in which it is situated was named after Adil Shah. This fort was ruled by the Portuguese for about 260 years and was finally deserted by them in 1892. Before them many Hindu rulers also attacked it but they faced failure. Today one can see only its ruins and the beautiful view of Morgim, Mandarem and Anjuna beaches.
Tiracol: Situated in the Canacona district in South Goa Tiracol was the residence of a local King. In 1746 Portuguese captured it and was used as the solider post to protect themselves from foreign attacks. This part of Goa is still virgin and a true paradise for nature lovers. While visiting this place tourists can indulge themselves in different adventure sports like para-sailing and rock-climbing. Today it has been converted to a heritage hotel where visitors can enjoy a peaceful stay.
Cabo de Rama: It is located in the southern part of Colva Bay was built in 1540 AD just opposite to Aguda. In 1594 it was the official residence of the Governor Of this state. A religious myth is also associated with Cabo.
