Amazing Spider-man

As I walked into the movie theater to watch the new Amazing Spider-man movie everything

felt slightly familiar, not just the experience of going to see a film but the experience of going to see a Spider-man film, it doesn't seem that long ago since I was last walking into the cinema to see a film about Marvel Comics Spider-man. In fact it has been only about 6 years since the third film of the last Spider-man series and just 10 years since that series began. With Marvel no doubt hoping for summer movie success before rival DC brings out the latest Batman film - is this Spider-man movie too soon?

The Amazing Spider-man stars Andrew Garfield (previously in The Social Network) as Peter Parker with his love interest Gwen Stacy played by Emma Stone. The film is directed by Marc Web who previously did (500) Days of Summer. As a reboot rather than a fourth film in the series this film retreats similar ground to that of the 2002 Spider-man film by going over the Spider-man origin story. Having seen this origin story played out numerous times through different formats - Marvel comics, cartoons, previous movies - this is one of the areas I felt the film fell slightly short. Not because it does it badly, because it doesn't, but simply because a summer movie should feel fresh and exciting while the first half of this film felt somewhat familiar, like a book I'd read before and had half forgotten. Here the Amazing Spider-man does make some changes that help it feel fresh, the focus is largely on Peter Parkers investigation of the disappearance of his parents which neatly introduces him to later-villain Dr. Curt Connors - the Lizard. One nice touch is that the film goes back to its roots by having the web-shooters being a mechanical device, whereas in Raimi's film they were biological - something that is not found in the comics.

Just like in the 2002 film the love story is a central part of the film, particularly early on before the web-swinging really begins in earnest. Although I often find myself willing the love story to hurry up so the action can really start this is a part of the movie where Spider-man rises above its predecessors. The simple fact is that Garfield and Stone are better actors than Maguire and Dunst in my opinion and any scene in which they are on screen together shines because of it.

Once the action does get going it is spectacular as you would expect and hope for from a Marvel Comics summer movie. Spidey swings all over the place with the aid of some excellent CGI and the battles with the Lizard are spectacular. The CGI is well-used but not over-used with significantly more live stunt work than Raimi's effort. The 3D works well with Spider-man's swinging through Manhattan and Rhys Ifans presents us with a complicated and interesting villain, one you can't help but sympathize with somewhat.

I've spent quite a lot of time comparing this film to the last set of films, which is understandable given that they still stand fresh in my memory. As a reboot this film is in many ways unnecessary, it really didn't need to come so soon. If you can step away from memories of the previous films it is a good movie, it really does itself a disservice by being released so soon after the previous trilogy. Garfield is great in the role as Spider-man (although at 28 he does stretch credibility somewhat by acting a teenager!) and the supporting cast does a fine job. The film has everything you'd expect and want from a Marvel Comics summer movie and I give it 4/5. I did not enjoy it quite as much as "The Avengers" and I'm still looking towards "Dark Knight Rises" as the likely superhero hit of the summer but The Amazing Spider-man is a great film in its own right once it gets going.
