Amazon Vs. eBay's Half: A Booksellers Guide
There are currently many competitors vying for market share in the used book selling industry. Amazon is currently the big dog on campus, but eBay has developed a book-based business off-chute called Half.com. As a book seller, both have their advantages, which are outlined below:
Amazon's current online bookselling system uses an inventory spreadsheet that easily displays what you are currently offering, and the current low price offered by other booksellers. This setup tends to drive up competition, and drive down pricing rather quickly for each book being sold. This approach leads to sellers frequently, and somewhat addictively, watching their inventory pricing to make sure theirs is the lowest.
Half.com's system, on the other hand, makes the process of adjusting book pricing a little more complicated. Booksellers typically go to their inventory page, and then click their book links to get to the pricing page for that book. This more labor intensive process, in turn, seems to stabilize the frenzied bidding that you get on Amazon. As a book seller, this setup requires less time constantly checking the current competition's pricing, freeing you up to do other business related activities.
Overall, Amazon has a larger market share, making it possible to sell your books quicker than using Half.com. The commissions are a little higher on Amazon, and prices tend to be a little lower than what you could make at Half.com. If you have time on your hands, Half.com would most likely make you more money, but if time is of the essence, use Amazon.
Book shipping is fairly comparable between the two sites. Each sends an email notification that can be printed on your computer. Amazon's label is one sheet, with a portion of the sheet used for your exterior shipping label, and the other portion that goes inside the box with your book. Half.com provides a full 8.5x11 sheet to be places inside the box, and an additional sheet which has the exterior label. This setup wastes paper, and the first page does not need to be printed.
Once a book is sold, Amazon provides a better payment distribution system. You are able to click on the Payment Account link, and request a payment distribution right after you confirm your shipment. Half.com is on a bi-monthly payment cycle, which can sometimes require a wait sometimes 2-3 weeks for the payment to show up in your account.
Try each website out and decide for yourself. While neither system is perfect, each website provides an invaluable service to booksellers.
