The name was replaced to Ambler in 1869 in honor of Mary Johnson Ambler, who was a community-minded woman known for her generous actions in helping others.
On the 17th of July 1856, one year and 15 days after it was formally opened the northbound train that townspeople referred to as "picnic special" collided with the southbound train head on between Fort Washington and Camp Hill Stations. In this very tragic accident, 59 people were killed and many of those who suffered injuries eventually died later on.
Reportedly, the always-ready to help woman by the name of Mary Johnson Ambler walked 2 miles to the site in order to extend rescue and relief efforts to the victims of the train disaster. In July, 1869, 13 years after the tragedy, the local railroad station was named Ambler to honor her heroic actions during The Great Train Wreck of 1856. Later the post office and the village also adopted the name. This is the story of how Ambler got its name.
