He believed America needed a top-notch road system to link the nation.

The current Interstate System is over 46,000 miles long. Built with funds from the federal government, the individual states own and operate the Interstate System in their jurisdictions. Understanding that a network of superior roads serves the collective good of the nation, legislators in an earlier era voted to allocate federal dollars to create this Interstate System.
