, rodeo and horse show held October-November each year at the Kemper Arena. One of the more well-known facts about the American Royal is that The Future Farmers of America (FFA) was founded during the event in 1928. Even the Kansas City professional baseball team named themselves after the American Royal. There are a number of American Royal hotel choices in the surrounding area from which those visiting for the annual event may choose.

In late 1800s the American Royal started out as a cattle show in the Stockyards of Kansas City. A beef industry editorial publish in 1901 in the Kansas City Dovers Telegram first suggested calling the event the American Royal. The editorial made note that the Royal Show was an event similar to the Royal Agricultural Society in England. In 1907, a horse show was added the American Royal with 5 more shows added since then. Vocational students were able to visit the American Royal in the 20s to judge the livestock. The organization held meetings annually till the late 90s.

The American Royal event as a whole has a major economic impact on the Kansas City area, bringing in roughly sixty-two million a year. Each year the American Royal encompasses an eight week season starting in October. The season includes rodeos, livestock shows, equestrian events and a barbecue competition. In addition to local hotels offering discounted rates during the event season, many other local businesses also contribute by way of volunteers, vending, and assistance with event set up. The American Royal is a non-profit event hosted and maintained by a local organization of volunteers.
