Amersham Is A Blending Of The Old And New
The ancient market town of Amersham in Buckinghamshire is situated in South East Englands Chiltern Hills
. An area of outstanding beauty, the Chilterns, as the hills are known locally, are a chalk escarpment that during prehistoric times provided a safe route across England.
Records date the town to pre-Anglo-Saxon times when it was called Egmondesham. Edward the Confessors wife, Queen Edith, held title to the land in those days until her death in 1075 when it was inherited by William the Conqueror who then gave it to Geoffrey de Mandeville. By the time the Earl of Essex obtained a charter for a Friday market and fair in 1200, the name of the town had become Amersham. Edward, the Earl of Bedford was granted a new charter for a Tuesday market in 1613.
Amersham has two districts, one being Old Amersham and the other is Amersham on the Hill. Old Amersham is in the valley of the River Misbourne, which is a shallow perch stream. The parish church of St. Marys that dates back to the 13th Century is located here. The Victorian style church includes 17th Century glass from the Lamer Manor in Hertfordshire. In the town are also several old pubs, the 1682 market hall and coaching inns. One historic timbered coaching inn building now houses a comfortable and modern coaching inn.
Amersham on the Hill became populated with the advent of the railway and railway station in the early 1900s. Originally known as Amersham Commons, it became Amersham on the Hill or Top Amersham when the Metropolitan Line, part of the London Underground, arrived in 1892. It is the last station on the main line. The earliest buildings in Amersham Commons are still standing and include the former Station Hotel, now flats, and the Temperance Hotel, now Amersham House. This was also the former headquarters of the Amersham Town Council.
One of Amershams first trading products was local grain and then brewing became a prominent industry during the 17th and 18th Centuries. It remained an important business until 1929 when the brewery was sold. Tanning and manufacturing of bricks and lace were all part of the towns industry. A scientific research company opened in Amersham during the Second World War, which today is part of GE Healthcare.
Ancient history and modern history are have become beautifully blended in Amersham. This month the historic interior of St. Marys will be the scene of modern Christmas caroling and a party with traditional mince pies afterwards. The Heritage Day celebration in Amersham saw the London Transport operate vintage 1938 cars and buses between Harrow on the Hill to Amersham. The Memorial Gardens in Old Amersham held Sunday in the Park band concerts in the summer. The former Woodside Farm, dating back to the 17th Century, is now the site of the Amersham Community Center.
A charming and historic town, Amersham was chosen to be the setting of several well-known films, including Four Weddings and a Funeral. And dating back to its origins, the markets are still open on Tuesdays in Amersham on the Hill, with Farmers Markets on weekends and occasionally under the notable market hall in Old Amersham.
