The god of wine Bacchus was filled with feeling of regret, he wept tears of wine over the stone maiden, his tears of wine created a lively purple stone.

Amethyst has been a popular stone through the history as its purple color was and is considered a royal color. Therefore it is not surprising that amethyst has been so popular through the times gone by. Fine amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favorite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian royalty. Till 1799 throughout Europe amethyst earned a royal appreciation. But in 1799 an abundant deposits of amethyst gems was discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia. The mining from those deposits caused the price of the amethyst gemstones to decrease.

The deposits of Amethyst stone can be found almost all over the globe but it's the quality that matters after all. On a large scale amethyst is mined in Zambia, Brazil, Uruguay, Sri Lanka, Siberia, Canada, India, Bolivia, and Argentina and some African countries. Zambia is a noteworthy source for Amethyst. Amethysts from Africa possess better and more saturated color.
