In 1864, Gerald Adriaan Heineken took control of De Hooiberg (the haystack) brewery
, at the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. This takeover purchase ended up laying the foundation for one of the world's largest modern breweries. In 1867, the company began the construction of the Heineken Brouwerij placed at the Stadhouderskade. It produced more than a 100 million liters, which is about 26 million gallons. With fermentation tanks, each tank able to hold about a million glasses of Heineken, are still standing along with multi story malt silos and all manner of vintage brewing equipment.
