Amsterdam's Culture
Amsterdam is instantly recognisable for its historic bridges over the picturesque
17th century winding canals which flow through the entire city, the narrow, cobbled streets, buzzing European caf culture and perhaps now notorious for its progressive nightlife. Situated in North Holland, this romantic city enjoys a rich history that has undergone some dramatic changes while still maintaining its authentic Dutch surroundings and outlook. From its humble beginnings as a quaint fishing village, through its days trading in diamonds, to the multicultural, progressive and lively cultural centre you see today; Amsterdam is probably one of the most famous and diverse cities in Europe.
You could probably choose a completely different experience every time you visited Amsterdam thanks to the huge wealth of things to do here. If you fancy getting to know the authentic city then you could always hire a bike, or perhaps get on a tram, to enjoy a quaint ride around the town - taking in some of the spectacular architecture on the way. Of course there are the famous windmills at Kinderdijk as well as the beautiful tulips at Keukenhof to visit, or if you fancy something a little more modern you could take a trip around the Heineken brewery, visit one of the many theme parks, or or head to the local Ajax stadium for some sports.
From the famous theatres showing a variety of performances, to the many exhibitions around the Leidseplein and Nes Street, to the many cinemas in the area including the 1920s Art Deco Tuschinski Theatre, the arts scene in Amsterdam is very well known indeed. Music lovers are also well catered for, as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is one of the best in the world - and not to mention the city's tradition for operatic theatricality and dance, with the Miziektheater home to the Dutch National Ballet.
There's loads of live music to enjoy around the town too, in the many bars, restaurants and cafs as well as clubs, casinos and concert halls. In the summer, music also fills the many parks and streets, but as the sun begins to set this idyllic, peaceful setting gives way to a much more lively, buzzing atmosphere. Lazy caf culture surrenders to bright lights - and no more so than in the well-known Red Light District. To the locals this is better known as Oudekirk, or Old Church, and it is the old quarter of town. Another popular locate is the medieval centre of Dam Square, which was originally constructed to protect the city and Amstel River from the Zuiderzee Sea far back in the 13th century. Today, street entertainers flock to the area as do carnivals, and there are many bars as well as the popular diamond centre and the imposing 17th century Royal Palace. You'll also find the very traditional Rembrandt Square, or Rembrandtplein, which was originally known as the Butter Market before it was named after the famous Dutch painter. Today it enjoys the mainstay of life in Amsterdam with many cafs and restaurants, but its history lies in its origins of being built from the remains of the old city port.
An innovator and encourager of diversity, Amsterdam displays both high-end art throughout its many galleries such as the Rembrandt House and Van Gogh Museums and also the street arts with performances that encompass mime, comedy, song and dance, along with events in street fashion and graffiti. Science and history are also prominent features and can be experienced through the Rijks Museum, the modern science museum of NEMO and the Noordwijk Space Expo. Plus, discover the dark historical underbelly as you delve into the fascinating history of this old world city found through a visit to Anne Frank's house and the ghoulish thrill of the Amsterdam Dungeon.
