. Founded in 1959, the company has expanded globally to sell primarily home, health, and beauty products. Multi-level marketing is also called direct selling. Products are sold to consumers by word of mouth and referrals. In just about a year, the number of Amway employees grew to 5,000. Sales people are compensated for both the products they sell as well as the sales that their employment recruits generate. Independent distributors try to develop what is called a downline. Each employment recruit recruits others to join the sales force and so on and so on. As every recruit is hired and starts making sales and recruits others, the person hired before that person benefits, to the top of the line.

Founders Jay Van Andel and Richard DeVos created Amway. The company's home base is Ada, Michigan. Along with global affiliates, the company has reported nearly 8.5 billion dollars in revenue in the last few years. The company is ranked as one of the largest, private companies of its kind. Amway began to expand globally in 1971, with sales personnel in Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa, India, Russia, China, and Vietnam. Amway manufactures many of its products in China, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, and India. Amway continues to offer other companies' brand name products as well.

In the late 1990s, Amway formed three sister companies. Known Quitar for several years, Amway reconsolidated to Amway Global in the 2007. There were issues with illegal pyramid schemes in the China division of Amway. China had nearly 180,000 Amway independent sales distributors at the time. The schemes were handled, and some of Amway's companies and brand products continued to be sold via retail stores. In spite of some negative press and bumps in the road, Amway continues to flourish as a successful, multi-level marketing business model.

Amway also offers jewelry and various electronics to customers beyond home, health, and beauty products that make up more than 450 total product types sold. Amway's first product was an organic cleanser. In the most recent years, the most popular products Amway offers are in the health and beauty market. Amway boasts one of the top five selling brands of beauty products in the United States. During the last few years, Amway Global has reached out to communities through the sports teams, radio network, and various charities it has invested in.
