As the winter months approach quickly, many people automatically look forward to the Christmas season. Because it is so commercialized and built up, it is hard to ignore the fact that this joyous holiday is right around the corner. It's almost as if we go from Halloween, straight to Christmas; however, there is an important holiday in between that tends to go unnoticed for a period of time, because of the hype that Christmas brings this would be Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and express thankfulness for anything and everything we have been blessed with. Whether that is the relationships we have, our family, the job we've acquired or even material possessions, it is a time when giving thanks is necessary.
Along with Thanksgiving comes a big feast. Having a surplus of food and drinks is a must, and no matter how big or small your group of family and friends may be, people always wind up buying enough food to feed two armies. It is easy to go overboard on this holiday, as the whole point is to indulge in good food, drink and company. It's important, though, to know when enough is enough and how much money is okay to spend until you are reaching the point of going broke. Preparing a Thanksgiving meal should be fun and enjoyable not something that's going to force you to seek out credit counseling for.
Make a list of all the food items that are a necessity. This will help keep you on track so you don't wind up spending more than you can afford to. Buying your basic items such as a turkey, stuffing, cranberries, green beans and potatoes will be plenty for this special occasion. Another way to avoid a possible debt management plan during this thankful time is having other people contribute to your feast. No one said you had to buy and make everything. Assign one dish to a couple family members and/or friends, and that alone will help out drastically in the money saving department.
This time of year calls for a lot of time spent with the people you love and giving back to those people. It should be a time of relaxation, happiness and a worry-free attitude. Therefore, don't let debt creep up on you and put a damper on this festive season. Remember, this is a time to be thankful for the things in your life so be thankful that you're not in debt!
