An Afternoon With Beads
My mom is having a crazy obsession with beads these past few years
. From high-quality beads to semi-precious beads even gemstone with beads, name it she knows it. For her, bead work is more than just a hobby, its an art.
Its amazing how this hobby of hers brings out her maternal side. She will sit with me for hours sharing her passion for beads. While other mothers would usually teach their daughters the common household chores, Mom would engage me in the activity of stringing beads together with utmost care. I remember one session we had wherein she told me that familiarizing myself with bead materials is one of the best secrets of making good jewelry beads.
Mom said there are seven types of bead materials namely: plastic, metal, glass, wood and seeds, stone, clay, and animal bones. Plastic beads are made by injecting a mold. They come in solid color, fluorescent or metallic. Metal beads are made from molded precious or non-precious metals. They are usually used for embossing than any other beads. Glass beads come from a melting glass from a mandrel or molded in a machine. It is frequently confused with stone beads but their difference lies on the perforation. Glass beads have perforated materials deposited into its holes. Stone beads, on the other hand, have drilled holes. Stone beads are from carved stone made into regular shapes. Wood and seed beads are made from carved wood or dried seeds which are punctured for stringing purposes. Clay beads are derived from any clay with the capacity to be hardened. The most ideal clay to use for bead crafting is homemade polymer clay. Meanwhile, beads from animal bones are the oldest form and the crudest type of bead crafting.
Mom tells me it is very important to possess basic knowledge about beads and their properties for that would be the basis of the quality of my design. You cant just string together two beads made from different materials since there are materials designed for a specific occasion only. For instance, plastic beads are not intended for formal occasions since glass beads and stone beads are the most common types of bead materials used for formal occasions, as they exude sophistication.
After a seemingly endless discussion with my mom about beads, I encouraged her to start a business involving selling wholesale beads or aaa gemstone beads. I believe in her skill and I know such business will take her to great heights since her passion for making jewelry pieces out of beads is so deep that there are not enough adjectives to describe it.
