An Agreement With The Removal Firm

Once you have hired your choice of removal firm then you will need to understand the agreement between the removal firm and you, the customer

. You should always have a written estimate based on a visual walk through of the household goods. A verbal rate quote is not binding, it must be in writing. Also remember if your move is a small one then the removal firm may impose a minimum charge for the move. Therefore if your move only takes two hours you may have to pay for their minimum of four hours which will be in your written estimate. The same holds true for weight. If your goods only weigh 3500 pounds the removal firm may have a minimum weight charge of 5000 pounds so you would have to pay for 5000 pounds.

In addition if you choose to pack your own goods you should make sure you look inside the boxes marked fragile to make sure nothing is broken. However if you packed your own fragile items and they arrive broken you will have to prove that the fragile items were broken due to the removals companys negligence and not your packing. This is not really easy to do. Most moving company will attempt to take care when they move you. If you have marked the boxes fragile and this side up and so on, they can see that and generally they will put them in the truck both carefully and where they will not be squished by heavier items.

If you are going to remove carpet or draperies then it is your responsibility to make sure these items are removed before the movers get there. First of all it is quite difficult to take up carpeting when there are boxes sitting on it and people are moving about on it. So if this has to take place make sure it has been done before you begin any serious packing and store it someplace out of everybodys way.

If you want your moving company to ship any items of high value such as antiques or jewelry you will be asked to describe them separately in the inventory list and then ascribe a value for each item. But it is really best if you take these items, especially the smaller items yourself. Perhaps you cannot handle antique furniture but a moving company will wrap all of the furniture, including your antiques, in padded furniture moving blankets. If there is say curved glass on the china cabinet they will also carefully wrap it by surrounding it with padded blankets. This is especially true if you let them wrap those antiques themselves so they take responsibility for packing the item.

There are some limitations on the movers liability such as you cannot claim a loss if perishables have deteriorated. Or if your appliances wont work properly and there is no exterior damage. They also will not accept responsibility if there is any insect or vermin damage. So read your agreement carefully.
