An App Developers Account Of Iphone App Development

With its AppStore for the Apple iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch

, Apple has created a true ecosystem for software developers. More than 1bn applications are currently waiting on it to be downloaded by the users on their devices. Meanwhile, there are professional programmers, major software companies and a flood of app developers who are trying as a small-business owner to participate in the success of AppStore.

Long before Apple, there were Symbian or Windows Mobile with Java applications having ample opportunities for developers to create appropriate software. Likewise, Google with Android has created another development environment.

Nevertheless, Apple mainly attracts a particularly large number of software manufacturers for the AppStore development environment. However, from where are such app produced anyway? How this comes about in the AppStore? And know-how of what tools you need for this? These are the questions running in the minds of many. Here we have compiled an effort to bring forth the developers point of view, in a replica of an interview style conversation.

How an iPhone app evolves or comes into existence?

As with any software development, first one needs a good idea for an app. After brainstorming we have to make the first thoughts on the proposed functions and the rough design of the user interface: How should the application be built and what features it will offer, then comes the actual programming.

Which tools to program iPhone apps? And where did you get these?

First, you must register for the iPhone Developer Program at Apple. There you will get the possibility to download the SDK (Software Development Kit). This provides the XCode tools that are needed for app development. Also included in the package is an iPhone simulator, where you can test the iPhone app. The basic download of the SDK and the development in XCode are free. A developer license is later required for subsequent publication against few bucks.

Apple uses any particular programming language?

Yes. For app development Apple has developed the Cocoa Touch framework, an adaptation of the usual Apple Cocoa frameworks. In its libraries, application programming interfaces (APIs) and runtimes Objective C is used. Objective C is an Object Oriented Programming language that Apple has developed from the C programming language. If you are familiar with the development of Mac apps, you do not need a big rethink; it's the same development environment.

What if you have developed the app, so you have adjusted all the mistakes and all the iPhone simulator tests have taken place?

The iPhone simulator is in many cases not enough to really test all the scenarios and features. Before submitting the app to Apple, it is therefore useful to test directly on iPhone or iPod Touch. For this we need Unique Device Identifier (UDID) of the device on which you want to install the app. These can be viewed with a connected iPhone in iTunes. This UDID is then used to generate its iPhone development account called provisioning profiles. Then directly from the development environment or through iTunes via USB, the application can be installed and tested on its test equipment.

Now the app is sufficiently tested. How this comes about in the AppStore?

So, for the app to get into the AppStore you have to submit it to Apple. This is done via a simple upload to a link deployed by Apple web portal "iTunes Connect". Review teams then checks taking two weeks time for each application. This view is from Apple in order to check whether the idea is previously available in the AppStore or not. It also checks for the development codes and methods, that whether they are in accordance to the parameters set by Apple Inc. If not, the developer receives a notice of rejection or with an invitation to deliver a patch.

Have you ever been denied an app?

Yes, this actually happened once. The review team had found that the button is shown for direct replacement of dial in number in the App, also for iPod Touch users. Thus was refused by Apple. The letter of motivation, however, was very understandable and helpful, so that we could fix the problem quickly. Apple appears to be, in fact, to look at every app and also updates exactly how to carry on the development.
