An Effective Cyber War Campaign Being Launched Against The United States

The fact that there is a cyber war campaign being launched against the US government

, co operations, businesses, and its citizens is no surprise to anyone. I believe that the size and scope of this operation would surprise many if they knew exactly how widespread this campaign actually is. I also believe from the material that I have read that this campaign has been very successful. We will probably never know the full scope of the damage that has been caused but it has been more than substantial. I cant prove it but I believe that the reason that the Chinese have been able to duplicate the top fighter jet that the US has is partially due to their successful cyber campaign against us.

The belief by experts in this field is that our problems will get worse in the near and foreseeable future.

Richard Bejtlich who is the chief security officer for Mandiant, which is an information security firm said 100 percent of the high-profile intrusions his company tracks were done with valid credentials which means that the cyber bad-guys had been able to steal a real users login and password and use them to make an intrusion rather than trying to figure out how to do so otherwise.

The typical time between the actual occurrence of intrusion and the time that it is discovered is about 416 days and most companies do not find out about them until the Feds show up doing their investigation. So the question which remains is how many intrusions occur that we never even hear about?

The publicly available malware in the cyber underground is now so good that anyone can use it. Cyber-intrusions and compromise are so endemic now that many attackers dont even bother with the wholesale vacuuming of information that used to characterize cyber-snooping. Now hackers go after very specific pieces of information, often data that is useless on its own. The information which is gathered in pieces is added to other bits of relevant information to form a complete solution.

The good news in all of this is that cyber thieves dont seem to have much success against our Department of Defense systems.

Cyber warfare is the newest dimension to modern warfare and it is an area where we need to grow and be prepared. I believe that the United States will always be the loser in this battle because of two reasons. First of all we have so much to offer. We have more information and technology than any other country in the world. Our technology (especially when it comes to military applications) is always ahead of most other places so we are apt to be attacked more often.

We are a traditionally open society so we leave most of our transactions unguarded or loosely guarded. We are conditioned to be this way and the way that people have been conditioned is the hardest thing to change. Countries who want to conduct cyber campaigns against us need only to play on this existing situation.

Now there is no doubt in my mind that the US government and co operations conduct their own cyber campaigns also. I imagine that we get just about whatever we need to have from our own actions but the fact remains that we will always lose more than we are able to get back. Military Ring Express
